Greetings and welcome to the Patriot Express Newsletter Edition #258. Thank you for stopping by to check out this week's newsletter. Don't look now but we are halfway through March. The fruit trees are flowered and now we wait to see if our mid-week frost will cause any damage. The weather is as wacky as our nation's politics.
Speaking of wacky, it was a crazy week. I made it home last Thursday night to work on Ms. Lucy's birthday on Friday. Family from WV and GA would arrive to celebrate, and Ms. Lucy also decided to take in a friends 12-year-old dog for the weekend. It truly was a great weekend. I got to spend some extended time with another nephew from South Africa who is attending a Bible College in New York. He has been in the US about 10 months, and I was amazed at his knowledge of American politics and the current state of affairs. We had a great time last Friday night sharing the evening for Ms. Lucy with family and a few neighbors who are our extended family and are HFS Patriots. Remember the Mississippi Mud cake I mentioned in the last newsletter? It was awesome. It was so tasty with vanilla ice cream. Another neighbor brought pineapple upside down cake, as well. I send a big "thank you" to both our dear sisters who made the evening just right. Thank you. Everything turned out wonderful and yes, Ms. Lucy did turn another year older.
When this newsletter officially posts, I will be in eastern Kentucky at the annual Kentucky Gun and Preparedness Expo, just outside of Hazard, Kentucky. This is a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday event this year. I will be teaching two classes: Security in depth and Building a Functioning Community. I look forward to seeing several of our HFS Patriot sisters and brothers who will be attending. I will return home on Sunday evening and then depart for Huntsville, AL on Tuesday for the week. I will do my best to keep things posted on a regular schedule as always.
We are two weeks into the HFS Annual Donation drive that last through March. You can read more on the webpage regarding the drive and what is about. We hope you will consider a donation to help offset operational cost through the year of 2024. All donations go strictly to funding the cost to keep things moving along uninterrupted. Without your support during the March donation drive HFS wouldn't be possible. Thanks for your consideration and support. Here is the link to the HFS Website main page. You should see the yellow donate tab in clear view. It is located just under the Contact Hope for Survival tab. Blog | Survival (hopeforsurvival.com) For additional information here is the HFS individual post on the topic.
I want to give a huge thanks to those who donated to this point. We are currently about 50% towards our goal. Your kind generosity is appreciated because without your support HFS would not be possible. Thank you.

We must make this brief public announcement to protect the innocent.
Ding, Ding, Ding....Attention HFS readers..... Opinions shared in this newsletter are just that, opinions, and nothing more. Read at your own risk. The owner and author of this site is not responsible for hurt feelings or thin-skinned readers. I do my best to show restraint and respect to the best extent possible. I take as many precautions as possible and try to remain as nonpolitical as possible, however, there are times when I just can't help but point certain things out. Occasionally I use words only Patriots recognize and understand. It's not personal against any non-Patriot. It's just the truth. Sometimes we must pull up our spenders and suck it up. Just saying. Stay the course, read what you want, and avoid the rest. Avoid fear porn as much as possible and the day will be okay. When all else fails… Keep the faith and always have Hope.
Let’s move along and get to some thoughts...
Thoughts for the week - Dental Preparedness
Years ago in my former life I was on a training mission off the beaten path in Africa. We had our typical team and resources to include a medic. It was the typical package we deployed with, and our resources covered A-Z and our assigned personnel had the skills to use all the resources on hand. Why have them if you can't use them, right?
Along the way, about day three one of our troops started complaining of a headache and he rubbed the side of his jaw often. Day four the headache remained and it appeared his jaw area was swelling. He stated his jaw and gum area was very tender in the back of his mouth at a back tooth. He complained of a bad taste in his mouth.
Our medic had treated the headache and was focused on the jaw and gum area. By the following morning, it appeared the tooth blew up and the troop now had an abscess tooth in the field. Down for the count and a four-to-six-hour drive to civilization to address the problem. He would need stronger antibiotics to decrease or stop the infection and then a treatment to remove the tooth or else a possible root canal in a semi-third world country.
My point is, just as the US military does in their mission planning, not only is a person's health monitored, so is their dental health. We, as humans, so often take our dental heath for granted and assume all is well in the roots and bone structure in our mouth. Good dental hygiene and regular checkups are always important. Yea, I know dental treatments cost more than a down payment on a car, but we still must keep this key area of our health in check.
As a preventive measure, below you will find some resources to consider to keep on hand for the moment a problem surfaces and to hold you over until a professional can help you out. What if that time period is far longer than you can handle if you have a low tolerance for pain. Maybe you are on vacation. Maybe its during a natural disaster such as a tornado or hurricane and all offices are closed for a period of time. What if it's the big one and the feces is hitting the rotating steel blades? Now what?
Dental Care Plantain, Plantago Major
• 3 Square feet
• Hardiness zones 3 through 12
• Soil pH 4.6 to 7.8, tolerant to pH 9
• Full sun to partial shade
Plantain has many medicinal qualities, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, moderates the immune system, and a weak whole-body antibiotic. I use it to treat auto-immune diseases, infections, and for toothaches and dental infections. I usually either juice the leaves or make an infusion from them. They can also be used as a leafy green vegetable.
Growing Plantain - The plantain that we are planting here is the herb, not the banana-like plant. It can take the abuse of being walked on and even mowed occasionally, so I use it as a spacer in the garden where I walk between other plants. Plant plantain directly in the garden when the weather begins to warm. No need to wait for the last frost. Sow three seeds per hole at a depth of 1/16 of an inch, just barely covered. Keep the seeds consistently moist until they germinate and space them about 12 to 18 inches apart. Once they sprout, they need very little care.
Harvesting Plantain - Plantain leaves can be picked by hand as needed. The roots are best collected with a spade or garden fork. The plant produces lots of seeds that mature in late summer. They are ready to harvest when the seed head turns tan.
Other Plants for Dental Care Feverfew, which I recommend for growing for muscles, joints, and tendons is also good for treating some dental problems, as are the dill, rosemary, and thyme that you probably have growing in your herb garden.
